The name’s Martin…Aston Martin (oh, come on…you know you want to)

Despite mainstream issues, the bespoke and high-end of the sportscar industry is bubbling like fury and Iain Robertson highlights a 50-off commemorative run of Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Specials set to sell at £300,007.00 each.

It is 50 years since filming began for the sixth James Bond movie, which told the story of Bond villain ‘Blofeld’ and his ongoing attempts to hold the world to ransom. The 1969 Aston Martin DBS provided James Bond with the perfect car for a man tasked with saving the world!

Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, said: “Aston Martin is synonymous with James Bond and the DBS, from ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, provided great inspiration to the team tasked with creating this very special edition. The new DBS Superleggera will be an extremely distinguished ‘brute in a suit’, designed to capture the essence of the iconic DBS from the 1969 film but powered by a 5.2 litre twin-turbo V12, 715bhp engine instead!

The power unit is set low and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimise the car’s centre-of-gravity and weight distribution. Developing a barking 715bhp, this high-performance engine features detailed tuning of the V12, together with an exhaust strategy featuring active valves and quad tail pipes. As a result, the DBS Superleggera has a commanding and powerful sound character, particularly in the more aggressive dynamic modes, while retaining a level of refinement and civility that compliments its role as a consummate British Super GT.

Boasting carbon fibre detailing, a front splitter, aero blade and unique diamond turned and forged 21.0-inch diameter alloy wheels, it looks striking. A bespoke metal grille featuring six horizontal vanes, adorns the nose of the limited-edition car to replicate the distinctive feature of the DBS featured in the original movie. Its exterior paint surface is enhanced with body coloured cantrails and roof, with commemorative side strakes and unique touches throughout; the car is every inch ‘007’.

On the inside, the DBS Superleggera is trimmed in pure black leather, accented by grey blend Alcantara, as in the original 1969 DBS. The cockpit is accented in red, inspired by the red trimmed glovebox in the original car, which held 007’s telescopic-sight rifle.

The 50 owners of this James Bond Special Edition will have the option to select a bespoke designed drinks case (at extra cost, naturally) which fits perfectly into the boot space. In keeping with the theme, this accessory is the perfect complement to the ‘Super GT’. The ebony black drinks case opens via the bright metal clasp to reveal the matching red felt-lined interior, with space for two bottles of champagne and four crystal flutes.

Aston Martin is riding the crest of a wave at present, as are McLaren, Lotus and several other British-based specialist carmakers. Factor in the European sales successes at Ferrari and Porsche and it is abundantly clear that, if you can afford it, you might as well flaunt it. (Note from ‘Q’: You need not request a discount!)

FCD Summary

Even though Aston Martin is majority share-owned by a Luxembourg finance group, it remains stoically British and linked perpetually to the ‘007’ movie franchise. Deliveries of the DBS Special commence in September 2019.
