Popular Octavia gets the SportLine treatment and value-added specification

One of the nation’s favourite new Skoda models, reports Iain Robertson, has just received a sportier boost, which is sure to keep it percolating close to the top of the midfield choices for both families and essential business users.

Without doubt, the Skoda Octavia has been a landmark motorcar. It was the first of the VW-related Skodas for a new era for the Czech brand, when it was launched originally in 1996. Following several regenerations, the Octavia SportLine joins similarly-badged models from the Karoq, Kodiaq and Superb ranges, and sits below the range-topping vRS models in the revised Octavia line-up.

Octavia has always been a practical machine, possessing bags of space within its interior and class-leading boot capacity. It has always been based on the same chassis architecture as the VW Golf and, although its exterior dimensions are greater, it is classified alongside its smaller relative. However, this has always provided the positive benefit of enhanced value for money. Today’s Octavia shows its heritage quite clearly, as each of the models introduced since 1996 has retained a highly recognisable profile.

In keeping with other models in the SportLine range, the latest Octavia version serves up a striking new look thanks to its gloss black front spoiler, radiator grille, door mirror caps and rear diffuser insert (below the rear bumper). The hatch model features additionally a gloss black rear lip spoiler. Riding on 18.0-inch diameter Vega alloy wheels, with five large ‘holes’, finished in black with silver detailing, its handling and roadholding will be up there with the vRS, albeit with more subtle damping. Full LED headlights with adaptive front lighting system and an LED daytime running lights signature complete the exterior design package.

In terms of standard equipment and technology, the SportLine builds on the already well-specified SE model but adds Amundsen satellite navigation, complete with 8.0-inch touchscreen display and integrated Wi-Fi, Infotainment Online (one year), Light assistant (coming home, leaving home and tunnel illumination) and rain sensor. In the cockpit, SportLine customers benefit from more heavily bolstered sport seats and dark grey and red upholstery, a plush black headlining and a sportier three-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel (which also comes with paddles, if specified with the optional DSG automated-manual gearbox).

Octavia SportLine is available in both hatch and estate car body styles and can be specified with two engine options; a 1.5TSI turbocharged petrol engine that generates 147bhp, or a 2.0TDI turbo-diesel that also produces 147bhp. The latter is equipped with a seven-speed DSG transmission as standard, which better suits its torque delivery and means that the driver is not having to grab manual gears in rapid succession. Meanwhile, the zesty 1.5TSI unit can be specified with either a six-speed manual, or a seven-speed DSG.

Pre-discount list prices for the new Octavia SportLine models range from £23,870 for the 1.5TSI manual hatch, to £27,860 for the 2.0TDI DSG estate variant. All Octavia SportLine models are available to order now, with first deliveries expected in late-April.

FCD Summary

We possess an understandable admiration for the Skoda Octavia. Its reputation for unburstable reliability, excellent space utilisation, fine performance envelope and superb dynamics, allied to keen discounted pricing keeps it close to the top of our most in-demand models.
