Infiniti presents its show concept for end of year events flurry

With a run of year-end shows and expositions to attend, Infiniti, the luxury arm of Nissan, has unveiled its latest ‘monoposto’ concept, states Iain Robertson, and, if you check back through our industry archive, you will see what it produced last time.

With an intention of bridging past and future, the Infiniti Prototype 10 recaptures the spirit of early speedsters for an era of electrified performance. The concept represents an electric drivetrain to enhance performance potential. It is the first project to be produced by Karim Habib, the company’s executive design director, and it hints at how the brand’s design teams can evolve the appearance of its future production cars.

The monoposto (single-seat) cockpit is consistent with a driver-focused approach. Cool, clean and forward-looking (albeit retro-styled), concept 10 echoes the design and layout of early speedsters, notably in North America. From 2021, all new Infiniti models will offer a mix of pure electric vehicles and e-Power vehicles using the full range of ultra-low emissions technology available. Breath-taking off-the-line acceleration and thrilling speed potential are Infiniti’s aims. By eliminating a need for external charging sources, the firm’s unique e-Power models will also provide inductive-charging ‘range confidence’ for longer journeys.

The concept’s design is characterised by clear, concise lines and confident proportions. With a pared-back, more geometric form, the bodywork incorporates a series of austere, straight lines, particularly evident in the 90-degree relationship between the bodywork and the aero-fin behind the driver’s head. Ultra-modern shapes, and clean, abrupt lines, punctuate a design that would otherwise be characterised by the flowing nature of its bodywork. Prototype 10’s cockpit is fitted only with a driver’s seat, four-point safety harness, brake and accelerator pedals, and an highly technical race-inspired steering wheel.

As there is no need for an intrusive steering column, because of Infiniti’s steer-by-wire adaptive system, only a pair of carbon-fibre struts hold the wheel in place. While that aspect is novel, with a flat lower section and distinct grips for the driver’s hands, it adheres to motorsport principles. With no gears to change, an electrified powertrain means fewer physical distractions. The single seat is trimmed in black leather, with red stitching.

FCD Summary

Purely a drivable design study, Prototype 10 only hints at the flexibility inherent to Infiniti’s design direction. If you want to know more about the British-built Infiniti Q30, which is available now and has more than a hint of Mercedes-Benz about it, just ask any member of our staff.
