If you thought that Lexus only made cars…get your sea legs ready and think again

The luxury car arm of Toyota, Lexus, likes to take its blend of reliable engineering and exacting detail to fresh extremes, writes Iain Robertson, but sea trials have already started on an ultimate Lexus that takes desirability to unthinkable new peaks.

If freedom of expression is allowed to expand beyond previously established boundaries, the results can be shocking, in a most positive vein. A number of luxury car brands like to associate themselves with either flying, or maritime, activities. They are considered to be happy bed-partners for the super-wealthy.

Crafting very good-looking cars is something that Lexus has pursued relentlessly. In fact, the company has already gained a repute for the beautiful hand-pleated door panels in the LS 500h saloon, as well as the complex paint process, inspired by morpho butterflies, which results in the dazzling Structural Blue finish on the LC 500 coupe. Applying its ‘science’ to a maritime application is simply proof that Lexus is prepared to explore new frontiers outside the automotive industry.

Lexus evaluates continually what constitutes a luxury experience and has ventured into the worlds of culinary art, design, film-making and more, to create alternative opportunities for its fans to interact with the brand. The company’s International President, Yoshihiro Sawa, has a vision of Lexus as a brand that explores new ways to deliver innovative and amazing experiences for its customers. As a result, Lexus has partnered with some of the world’s finest purveyors of experiences to further celebrate the phrase, ‘Experience Amazing’.

With a Lexus yacht, LY 650, which displays the most contemporary expression of Lexus’ design language, L-finesse, it picks up where the stunning Lexus Sport Yacht Concept, shown a couple of years ago, left off. Lexus was determined to present a dream-like vision of a luxury lifestyle, where the Lexus Yacht expands the potential of Lexus mobility to the ocean waves. Marquis-Larson Boat Group was selected to build, sell and service the next Lexus yacht based largely on its extensive experience with bespoke boat building and its proven capability, confirmed by having brought the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept to life.

Based in Pulaski, Wisconsin, Marquis-Larson complements Lexus’ renowned heritage of craftspeople, who are supremely skilled in their roles. Marquis’ craftsmanship is clearly demonstrated by its masterful boat builders, many of whom have been with the company for 30 years or more.

Several of the most attractive features from the 42-foot concept have made their way onto the LY 650, which features a 65-foot overall length and 19-foot beam form. The latest Lexus yacht has a distinguished style found in its strong, pronounced bow, curved deck accents and accentuated aft hips. Its interior accoutrements are of the highest calibre. Viewed from its profile, the elegant rise and fall of the yacht’s distinctly Lexus roofline flows into rising, broad hips of the rear section. If you are into boats, this one is an inescapable beauty!
