M-car focus presages arrival of all-new BMW 3-Series

While a completely fresh M3 is still more than year away from production, reports Iain Robertson, an M-focused edition will make headlines at the forthcoming LA Motor Show, to act as a performance signpost for the latest compact saloon.

The new BMW 3-Series saloon is picking up momentum on its way to launching the new range in the spring of 2019. The BMW’s renowned Motorsport department is unveiling an exceptionally dynamic version of the new model. Known as the BMW M340i xDrive saloon (official combined fuel consumption: 31.7mpg US; with CO2 emissions at 172 g/km), it is powered by a brand new development of the firm’s straight six-cylinder petrol engine, now producing an amazing 374bhp.

Riding on M-specific suspension technology and intelligent four-wheel drive, outstanding driving dynamics are anticipated for the line-up expected to launch in the UK in July 2019. Aided by a low centre of gravity, optimised kerbweight, typical 50:50 weight distribution and uprated body rigidity and suspension mountings, BMW expects the car to set new standards for the class.

The power unit developed for the BMW M340i raises the vehicle’s characteristics in areas of performance, response, revving power, running smoothness and efficiency, aspects typical of BMW straight six-cylinder engines, to a new level. The 3.0-litre engine features an aluminium crankcase and an aluminium cylinder head. The turbocharging system, constructed using ‘TwinScroll’ and variable valve principles, has been redeveloped significantly.

It is the most powerful engine used in the BMW 3-Series (although the M3 is even more focused), and boasts a maximum torque of 369lbs ft. It completes the sprint from 0-60mph in a blistering 4.1s, before reaching its electronically-limited maximum of 155mph. Thanks to an M-Power exhaust system, its engine note has been tuned to a distinctive level. The dual-pipe M Sport exhaust system is fitted with two petrol particulate filters, enabling the M340i to meet the most recent emissions standards.

Driving through an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, it is characterised by an optimised hydraulic control system and exceptionally speedy shift dynamics. Short ratios for the lower gears improve acceleration and a ‘launch control’ function can be used for accelerating hooligan-like from a standstill. Shift paddles on the steering wheel cross-spokes enable manual gear selection on demand.

Four-wheel drive technology ensures maximum traction, agility and vehicle stability. A rear-wheel torque-split supports a brand-typical driving experience and is particularly effective in the driver selected SPORT and SPORT+ modes. Tyres in 225/45 R18 size are mounted on the front wheels, while wider 255/40 R18 tyres are used at the rear. Optional 19.0-inch M light alloy wheels, in two designs, and 19.0-inch BMW Individual light alloy wheels, also fitted with mixed tyre sizes, are also available.

The new M340i features different front apron, side sills and rear end panel treatments that optimise both the cooling air supply and aerodynamics. The traditional BMW ‘double-kidney’ grille now boasts a mesh design, the rear spoiler is finished in body colour and blarey trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes complete the look. Inside the car, sports seats with M-specific upholstery, in a Sensatec/Alcantara trim, an anthracite BMW Individual roof liner, the leather-clad M steering wheel with shift paddles and interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon provide an intensive driver-orientated ambience. The digital instrument cluster carries the lettering ‘M340i’, as do both front door sills.
