Entry-level Citroen gets Urban Ride upgrade, again

Having sold over one million units worldwide since its launch, writes Iain Robertson, Citroën’s C1 city car continues to be a popular choice having registered 7,457 examples in the UK last year, with sales of over 51,000 across the rest of Europe.

Last year Citroën introduced the first C1 Urban Ride special edition. For spring 2019, there is an updated version. With its dynamic styling and go-anywhere cutesy appearance, C1 Urban Ride embodies urban adventure, with a style influenced by C-Crosser versions of larger models in the company’s range.

The revised version features large wheel-arch extensions, ‘Urban Ride’ decals on the rear doors, special graphic stripes on the rear quarter panels, white door mirror caps and 15.0-inch diameter black alloy wheels with black centre caps. Six body colours are available, with the option of a black roof that adds character to the city tiddler.

Significant changes also feature inside the car, with its grey and white ‘Jacquard-style’ upholstery, with discreet red topstitching, and dedicated floor mats carrying the Urban Ride logo. Anodised white trim around the multimedia module and on the upper part of the dashboard, adds a splash of brightness, while a gloss black finish on the gear knob and the air vent surrounds and an Urban Ride dashboard graphic complete the image.

The C1’s core quality of urban agility, aided by its compact dimensions (3.46m long) and responsive handling (10.2m turning circle), is supported with accessible space for four people and some of their belongings. The boot offers a modest 196-litres capacity but, if the rear seats are not needed for passengers, it can be expanded to 780-litres by flopping forward the rear seat backrests. There are multiple storage spaces throughout the cabin and cup holders too.

Citroën C1 Urban Ride is an ideal car for city dwellers but it also gives a good account of itself on the open road, with tidy handling, good performance and a moderate ride quality. The car is also fully connected and comes with a wide range of features, including a reversing camera, 4-speaker stereo radio, with steering-wheel controls, Bluetooth hands-free phone operation and a USB socket. The model also features connectivity through its 7.0-inch touchscreen and extended Mirror Screen compatibility (for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink).

C1 Urban Ride is available with a broad choice of optional equipment, including: Automatic Pack Plus (auto air conditioning, automatic headlights, keyless entry and start) and Active City Brake (which comes as a ‘pack’ with lane departure warning and a speed sign recognition and recommendation system). The car is also available in both 5-door hatchback and 5-door soft-top forms (C1 Airscape Urban Ride). With its electric sliding black canvas roof and impressive fully-open aperture (800mm long and 760mm wide), the Airscape version offers open-air motoring regardless of season.

Citroën C1 Urban Ride is powered by the latest-generation of PSA’s 3-cylinder petrol engine, with Stop/Start, paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox (VTi 72 S&S manual). Modest-performance allied to excellent fuel efficiency, its powertrain is fully compliant with the latest emissions standards.
