Too readily ignored, the Fiat 500 is available in more spacious ‘L’ guise

Ever since the first post-WW2 baby Fiat was launched, it has had a larger ‘L’ variant in its line-up, highlights Iain Robertson, and the current range is no exception, which makes its latest development one that is sure to generate better responses.

Introducing an S-Design version of the Fiat 500L means that it joins the S-Design family, which already encompasses Tipo and 124 Spider models. Based on the Cross trim level, it stands out for one of its more interesting colour options, a matt Donatello Bronze paint paired with black roof and Myron finish accents, including side mouldings, door handles, front grille, rear light cluster bezel and door mirror covers. The sporty look of the new special edition is enhanced by dark tinted rear windows and new 17-inch alloy wheels, also in Myron finish.

The interior is accented with its matt black textured dashboard with copper-coloured ‘500’ logo. Special S-Design seats, complete with black techno leather inserts, double stitching and copper ‘500’ logo factor in a touch of elegance. The car pictured is in Darkwave Black. Featuring a 7.0-inch touch-screen, the next-generation Uconnect provides outstanding levels of connectivity that include voice recognition and hands-free Bluetooth. Apps are projected into the central display and linking with Google enables its mapping and music to be used to maximum effect.

Paired with the 95bhp 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and 6-speed manual transmission, excellent fuel economy and zesty performance are parts of the package. However, a new entry-point to the 500L range comes in City Cross trim. With raised ride height, it offers SUV styling that is enhanced with front and rear bumpers clad with skid plates, side mouldings and wheel arch mouldings from the Cross trim. The City Cross also offers the latest in-car connectivity.

The new Fiat 500L S-Design will be in showrooms from October 2018, priced from £18,610, prior to FCD discounts being applied, while the Fiat 500L range now starts from £16,710 for the Urban 1.4-litre 95bhp model.

FCD Summary

The success of the Fiat 500 means that it overshadows its more practical stable-mate, the 500L. It is a viable family car, offering loads of space in a very competent, yet still compact package.
