Comprehensive revisions for UK’s best-selling Mitsubishi PHEV

As one of the pioneering motorcars of the ‘new age’ of EVs and PHEVs, reports Iain Robertson, Mitsubishi’s Outlander has been revised slightly in styling but substantially beneath the skin, to bring it right up-to-date and fresh for the future.

An almost entirely-new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been launched to meet the latest exhaust emissions regulations, coming into effect in September 2018, and it qualifies comfortably for the government plug-in car grant. With its WLTP emissions rating of 46g/km and an EV range of 28 miles, the PHEV qualifies for the lowest possible BIK rate (for business users) of 13 percent.

Powering the PHEV is a revised 2.4-litre petrol engine that now produces 133bhp (up from 118bhp) with greater torque (155 vs 140lbs ft). The rear electric motor output increases to 92ps and the drive battery benefits from a 10% increase in output, with its overall capacity increased to 13.8kWh, all of which results in a WLTP Official Combined fuel economy of 139mpg, although its actual figure, improved over the original, will still be around 65mpg.

To complement the electro-mechanical enhancements, several other changes intend that the Outlander PHEV is more pleasant to drive. The front and rear shock absorbers have been revised to improve its low-speed ride and a new ‘Sport Mode’ introduces a crisper throttle response and more grip from the Super All-Wheel Control system. The steering ratio has also been revised and the power steering ECU re-mapped to offer greater responsiveness and feel, while larger front brake discs improve the car’s stopping power. A new ‘Snow’ mode helps to improve low-grip take-offs and cornering agility on slippery surfaces.

Overall, the revised car is both quieter and more refined, with more comfort in its supportive front seats, new switchgear, a revised instrument cluster, the addition of rear air vents and more practical USB ports. In terms of exterior style, there is a new front end with a redesigned grille and honeycomb mesh, a new bumper extension and fresher headlamp design. The rear is enhanced with a rear lower-bumper extension and a larger roof spoiler, while two-tone 18.0-inch multi-spoke alloys complete the exterior revisions.

Connectivity has been improved, with Smartphone Link Display Audio that incorporates both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. An electronic pre-heater (and air-con) function is also standard and is complemented with heated front seats, heated windscreen and dual-zone climate control. An electronic parking brake, with brake auto-hold, is located in the centre console. Other key features include a keyless entry system, with Start/Stop button, front fog lamps and LED daytime running lamps. The entry-level Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Juro is priced from £34,255, prior to factoring-in the FCD discounts.

The Outlander PHEV 4h builds on the already well-specified Juro, with added safety equipment such as a 360° camera, blind-spot warning and rear-cross traffic alert. Other additions include the all new black headlining, which complements the black leather interior, an 8-way electrically-powered driver’s seat, heated steering wheel and power tailgate. Lighting is enhanced with LED headlamps, LED High Beam and LED front fog lamps. The 4h variant is priced from £37,000, again prior to removing the FCD allowances.

Completing the line-up is the 4hs specification that adds a host of safety equipment, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning. Front and rear parking sensors, Auto High-Beam and an Unintended Acceleration Mitigation System are also included in a car priced £2,100 above 4h specification.
